Bite by Bite: A Healthier Smile, One Step at a Time
Your dental problems didn’t happen overnight. And we don’t have to fix them overnight.
A personal reflection by Dr. Raechell-Ann Barras, Principal Dentist at Majestic Smiles Dental in Kingston, Jamaica.
How do you eat an elephant?
I once read a saying that went something like, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” I don’t know what it was about that phrase, but it immediately made me think about the thousands of patients I’ve seen over the years who have sat in my dental chair feeling completely overwhelmed by the mountain of dental concerns they face.
Some have several cavities. Others have missing teeth, gum problems, or years of dental treatment they’ve been putting off.
And sometimes the biggest obstacle isn’t even the dental problem itself. It’s simply not knowing where to begin.
“Most dental problems didn’t happen overnight, and we don’t necessarily have to solve them overnight either.”
We can start somewhere. We can make a plan. We can take one step at a time.
Or, as I like to say, bite by bite.
Every healthier smile starts with one small step.
Your smile is a journey, not a judgment.
Every sweet drink. Every night too tired to brush. Every flossing session pushed to tomorrow. Every appointment you meant to make.
And sometimes it isn’t even about what you did wrong. Maybe no one taught you how to brush properly, or regular dental care wasn’t accessible.
Whatever brought you here, we can help you find a way forward.
You don’t have to fix everything at once.
At Majestic Smiles Dental, our job isn’t to shame you for how you got here. Our job is to understand where you are, what needs attention, and how we can move forward together.
We start with an assessment, explain our findings, prioritize what is urgent and build a realistic treatment plan.
Comprehensive assessment
Clear, honest explanations
Personalized treatment plan
Support without judgment
Taking treatment step by step starts with knowing what needs prompt attention. If you have pain, swelling or a dental injury, contact the practice so we can advise you.
Because dental treatment should make sense.
We believe patients should understand what is happening in their mouths. If you have a cavity, we want you to know why. If your gums are bleeding, we want to help you understand what may be contributing to it.
Good dentistry isn’t only about repairing teeth. It’s also about helping you take better care of the teeth you still have.
